Pre-Advocacy Academy

All CASA volunteers begin their advocacy with foundational training. The Pre-Advocacy Academy, led by CASA of New York State and local programs, is designed to prepare you to speak up for children in foster care or at risk of removal — with knowledge, compassion, and clarity. No previous legal or social work experience is required.

What You’ll Learn

The Pre-Advocacy Academy equips you with the knowledge and skills you need to be a successful Court Appointed Special Advocate.

    • Understanding child abuse and neglect

    • Trauma & Resillience

    • Family Court & Child Welfare Systems

    • Cultural and Bias Awareness

    • Building Rapport

    • Communication, Note Taking and Court Report Writing

How the Academy Works

Each Training Session blends live ZOOM classes and online independent learning. Here’s what you can expect:

    • approximately 36 hours

    • 6 weeks in length

    • 1 class per week for 3 hours

    • Online pre-work required between sessions

    Classes are facilitated collaboratively by Local CASA Staff and CASA of New York State’s Director of Training & Technology.

Register Through Your Local Program
