Who are CASA Volunteers? CASA volunteers
are ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things. Our volunteers come
from all walks of life with a variety of professional, educational, and
ethnic backgrounds. We currently have nearly 825 volunteers, located in
CASA programs in 36 counties. Meet a CASA
volunteer.
What do they do? CASA volunteers are
appointed by Family Court judges to advocate for the best interests of
a child victim in cases of abuse and neglect. A volunteer's role in
abuse and neglect proceedings is to present the court with a neutral
perspective regarding what is in the best interests of the child. To
prepare their recommendations, CASA volunteers talk with the child, as
well as parents, family members, social workers and other persons
involved in the child's life. Read examples of
CASA cases.
What is the need? The telephones are ringing
everyday with more and more cases. National studies have shown that a
child who has been assigned a CASA volunteer spends less time in court
and less time in foster care than those who do not have CASA
representation. We want to be able to provide a CASA to every abused /
neglected child who is caught up in the court system. To do this we
need to increase our volunteer pool.
What training is provided? Each CASA program
in NYS provides both initial and in-service training to volunteers.
Before being sworn in by a Family Court judge, a volunteer must
complete a comprehensive 30-hour pre-service training. The curriculum,
designed by National CASA, informs volunteers about courtroom
procedures, the dynamics of abuse and neglect, cultural differences,
and effective advocacy techniques. Volunteers are also training in
state and local resources and regulations. Take a
look at NY statistics relating to child abuse and neglect.
What can you do to help NY's children? A
gift of your time can help. Become a Court Appointed Special Advocate
and speak for the best interests of an abused and neglected child in
court. For more information about volunteer opportunities in your area,
contact your local CASA program.
Our programs also have a need for volunteer help in other
areas – clerical, fundraising, etc. And of course, your generous donations are most appreciated.
