Presented by Joshua Russell, MD, is an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University at Buffalo (UB) Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Buffalo. He completed his undergraduate education at UB with a major in psychology. He then completed medical school, general psychiatry residency, and child psychiatry fellowship through UB. Upon completion of fellowship training in 2017, Dr. Russell joined the faculty of UB’s Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Russell’s primarily practices in the outpatient setting at UBMD Psychiatry and The Children’s Psychiatry Clinic. He also dedicates a significant portion of his clinical time to providing consultations for primary care providers and has a particular interest in working with children involved in the foster care system. Dr. Russell developed this training through a grant from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s Marilyn B. Benoit, MD, Child Maltreatment Mentorship Award.

Children in the child welfare system system require a knowledgeable and comprehensive team to provide the care they need. This team includes doctors, therapists, teachers, care coordinators, lawyers, and volunteers. CASA volunteers serve as critical members of this treatment team. This series will provide comprehensive and practical information about the psychology, neurobiology, treatment options, and resources available to help care for children in the foster care system. Session 1 will focus on attachment and development. Session 2 will focus on mental health. In Session 3, Dr. Russell will discuss mental health systems and resources in New York State.
